Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital, is a city of layered histories and understated charm — vibrant, authentic, and still refreshingly uncrowded. Perched between two shimmering bays, it is one of the Mediterranean’s oldest cities, with roots that stretch far deeper than Rome itself.

Over the centuries, Sardinia’s capital has been shaped by countless civilisations: ancient Sardinians, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Pisans, Genoese, Spanish rulers, and modern Italians. Each has left its mark — not only in stone and skyline, but on the table.

Cagliari’s cuisine is a true reflection of this heritage. It draws from the land and sea of the entire island, combining exceptional local meats, freshly caught fish and seafood, handmade pasta, fragrant olive oil, and an extraordinary range of sheep, goat, and cow’s milk cheeses. Native grape varieties — many found nowhere else — complete a cuisine that is bold, honest, and deeply tied to place.

Dining in the historic center is a journey through time and flavour. From prized mullet bottarga and Spanish-influenced panadas, to the distinctive burrida and a surprising variety of seasonal vegetables, each tasting tells a story of tradition, adaptation, and local pride.

Our private food and history walking tour leads you through Cagliari’s ancient heart, made up of four historic districts and crowned by the Castello, which overlooks both the Gulf of Cagliari and the Gulf of Angels. Along the way, we explore the city’s two social anchors: lively Piazza Yenne, a natural meeting place, and the monumental Bastion of Saint Remy, whose panoramic terrace offers sweeping views across rooftops, sea, and sky.

We wander through the animated streets of Marina, where cultures blend effortlessly, pass through elegant Stampace, home to the Roman amphitheatre, and arrive in colourful Villanova, known for its flower-filled houses, quiet squares, and relaxed local rhythm.

This walking experience is as much about atmosphere as it is about flavour — an ideal way to begin your Sardinian journey, or to bring it to a meaningful close.

About the Tour

This private e-bike experience reveals the natural landscapes that surround Cagliari — a side of the city where wetlands, sea, and open horizons define the rhythm of the day.

We begin by cycling out of the historic centre towards the harbour, home to elegant pleasure boats and calm, open waters. With a little luck, dolphins can sometimes be spotted moving quietly through the bay. From here, a scenic cycle path leads us along the waterfront, gently leaving the city behind as we follow the canals that feed the Molentargius lagoon.

As the landscape opens up, the sounds of the city fade and nature takes over. The lagoon is one of Sardinia’s most important wetlands and a protected habitat for an extraordinary variety of birdlife. Moorhens, rare duck species, herons, egrets, and — most famously — thousands of pink flamingos populate the park. We move slowly and respectfully through reeds and observation points, allowing time to observe and photograph these remarkable animals in their natural environment.

Leaving the park, we connect with the cycle path that stretches for kilometres along Poetto Beach, Cagliari’s iconic shoreline. Here, the ride becomes effortless and expansive, with uninterrupted sea views. We stop along the beach to enjoy an aperitif by the water, with the option of a refreshing swim for those who wish.

The final highlight of the excursion is the ascent to Capo Sant’Elia lighthouse, an optional climb of approximately one mile. From its commanding position above the turquoise waters of Cala Mosca — a small, much-loved local beach — the panorama opens across the city, the Molentargius wetlands, Poetto Beach, and both the Gulf of Cagliari and the Gulf of Angels.

Aside from this optional climb, the entire route is flat and follows dedicated cycle paths, making the experience accessible and relaxed.

On request, the tour can include a lunch stop overlooking the sea, where you’ll enjoy authentic Cagliari cuisine in a spectacular setting.

The return journey follows a flat cycle path back into the city, closing the day with a sense of calm, space, and connection to Sardinia’s coastal nature.

About the tour

This tour brings us into the ancestral heartland of Sardinia, discovering the ancient and mysterious Nuragic civilization. Dating back to the Bronze Age, the civilization here was among the most evolved of any in the Mediterranean region. With no written history, the stone Nuraghi structures that they left are all that remains of this people and culture.

Our day will start with a scenic drive out to the archaeological site and then a guided visit. Afterwards, we'll have stop by a boutique vineyard for a tour and tasting, and then an authentic lunch at a local family's home.

Leaving from Cagliari, within just a few kilometers the city fades behind us and we enter into a land of lovely countryside known as the Marmilla. Here, gentle hills covered in grain fields and olive groves surround us, watched over by the crumbling castle of Las Plassas perched atop a perfectly conical hill.

Our first major stop of the day is Su Nuraxi di Barumini, the prime archaeological symbol of the Nuragic culture and one of its best preserved sites. Sardinia is full of Nuraghi and you will find them dotted all across the countryside, but this site holds special historical significance as it was the main Nuraghe studied by archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu, who wrote the first thesis on the Nuragic civilization.

Nuraghi are monolithic stone structures whose purpose we still don't understand. They were made using massive individual stones, not cut ones or bricks, and it remains to this day a bit of a mystery how they were able to move such massive stones and create such imposing structures using simple Bronze Age tools.

Visiting Nuraghi sites is fascinating and while they’re impressive to see just from the outside, once you moved inside the perimeter walls is when things get really interesting. Within the structures, you’ll be able to see the complexity and craftsmanship of a vanished people from over 5,000 years ago.

A visit takes about an hour and we’ll wander the grounds, admiring the work and climbing the various towers while talking about Sardinian history and culture.

After exploring the Nuraghi, we'll head to a boutique vineyard to try some interesting and unique local wines. We'll get to tour the grounds and meet the producers, learning not just about the wines, but the region too.

For lunch, we'll hop back in the car and head to the home of a local family where we'll have a rustic family-style meal of typical food, much of it prepared with ingredients produced on-site!

From lunch it's about 1-hour drive back to Cagliari.
